On escaping the cold

01/15/2011 in Life,Uncategorized

I walk a couple miles every day during the week. From my apartment to the train stop, the train stop to the office, and back again. Also worth mentioning?

It’s really cold in NYC right now.

On the way home in the afternoons, it’s always tempting to escape the weather for a few moments and warm up in one of the many stores that I pass. The trouble is, this doesn’t get me home any faster. And I don’t make any progress when I’m doing what feels good in the short term.

Just keep swimming.

You’re one of the few people I know that can take something as simple as walking home, and make a life lesson out of it.

Ha! That reminds me of a Shakespeare quote that I love:

Sweet are the uses of adversity, which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in his head; And this our life, exempt from human haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.

Sermons in stones man. It’s what you’re looking for that counts.

Welcome to NYC! I hate the cold and keep thinking that one of these days, after enough people speak up, someone in power will discontinue winter. I’ve written to my congressman. Nothing yet.

I do stop into stores for a blast of warm – or, in summer, to make the sweating stop before I get to my destination.

Thanks! It will take some adjustment for sure, but I’m glad to be here.

Please keep us all posted on that letter to the congressman…
