So what should I tell to my future employer when they ask why you want to change your job or company. I don't want to tell them that I have been laid off neither I want to tell them "I am desperate please give me a job". Please tell me how to handle and will there be any backfire if they found out in future?
I do agree when it's time for layoff's it's not what you know but it's who you know.

Hi. So I have worked the same place now for decades but because of a painful divorce and the company closing I am out of work and feeling depressed and panicking when I'm stuck at home not knowing what to do... I am not like this. I am usually organized and with it, but these days I'm feeling like I'm in a void and can't concentrate well and get things done orderly. I think the biggest issue is I feel everything is out of order. That nothing is in it's place and that I've got too much to do and yet I can't get anything done.. how do I settle myself down a bit and feel like my life is not complete and utter chaos on those moments when I'm feeling overwhelmed?.... I guess it's just one of those days right now but life sure seems chaotic. Then you see what's going on in the country and I really lose faith in everything.

I have recently and for the first time ever been "laid-off". As a Director I have had to also lay off employees over the years. I was told in writing that my position has been eliminated, and I too have worked countless hours, 10-12 hr. days 70 hr. weeks.
I do believe part of the decsisions are personal. Managers keep lower paid, less productive workers who may be compensated less and have have less years of service, but who play the game better....in fact I believe quality is often compromised in order to save money, and report profit to stock holders.
I am almost 60 and have no idea where to turn for assistance.

I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me. I really think the slackers i worked with were jealous of my job performance and snubbed me while i worked with them. I was kind, quiet, & never a harsh word to anyone. It was a matter of a coworker kissed up to the boss and even though she put out 1/2 the work i did, I was laid off and she was not. Its who you know and who the boss likes the most.

Gayle - Were you caught up in a layoff in your company? If so, you don't have to give any explanation. Unfortunately, you are in good company. Many people who worked for one place for many years are now left without their jobs, but no one should expect you to explain why. It's not your fault, and it is better to focus on your next steps and plans than worrying about why it happened.

If you were let go, but not as part of a layoff and the company did not give you a reason, you should provide a truthful explanation (only when requested) that makes the most sense. For example, "The company decided to re-focus their efforts in a different direction and my position was not needed."

Either way, it is a good idea to follow David's advice - focus on moving on. There are many resources online, depending on your situation. I welcome you to visit my site, http://www.keppiecareers.com/ to help you start to gather the information you need to move forward. Good luck!

What do you tell potential employers or employment agencies when you don't know why you were even let go because NC does not have to tell you? I have been in the same line of work for 20 years and have worked so hard for my employers so to find that my position was terminated, almost makes me feel ashamed for I know not what I did. I never even took vacation time, was honorable, hard working and completely honest -- always protecting the integrity of my employers. I'm at a loss.
